A Good Day is like this

2010 October 22
by PK

Picked up the kids from school. We had a late night the night before, so I know everyone (including myself) is tired. Went home. Let them make their own honey with warm milk. Told them to go take a nap. I was distracted with a work email or two, then realized the loft is very quite. They went into the bedroom themselves and pretty much got into bed for their naps.

We all took a two hour nap. Got up. Decided to go to Bugaboo for dinner. Ordered. They did the games on the kiddy menu. Nice clean dinner. Even ate their vegies. Went over to the store that “starts and ends with the letter T” to pick up some socks. Went home. Washed. Bed.

All in a days work!

Times Table

2010 October 21
by PK

I was drilling them on multiplication tables in the car. I was surprised (or not) that the little one was quicker on the simple answers. 2×3. 3×3. Of course once we got up to the difficult ones the older one jumped in and got the right answers.

Singing and Choir

2010 October 19
by PK

Pretty much since birth, G’s singing is not that great. He is almost completely not getting pitch at all. I have been nudging him along whenever I can. The irony is that they have always been watching TV shows like American Idol with mommy, and can pretty much pick out the good singers vs the bad ones. I could never understand that.

Recently we have been watching the BBC the Choir a little, and that show has more “music teacher” moments in it. Gabriel seems to take a special interest. A few days ago I found a cute children choir video on You Tube and showed it to them. Surprising G wanted to keep watching it, and wanted the lyrics and try to sing along. Took me a while to figure out why the sudden interest…

He is placed in a Choir in school at church. Perhaps is the “good student” in him, or there are competition, I think he actually enjoy it and/or want to do well in it. Now if I can get the same results re rock climbing.

Young ebook reader with the Kindle

2010 September 9
by PK

G suddenly show a lot of interest with my Kindle. Last two days he decided to read a few paragraphs on what I was reading. Of course it was not very interesting material (It was something on education). Tonight he finally asked “do they have Flat Stanley” on the Kindle?

I searched, ordered it, and he started reading it. Am I going to have to share the Kindle with him now?

Taking Care of Play Doh

2010 July 12
by pk

How much changes do one year make. Last year every can of play doh that G and M received has been mixed up and dried up within first day of playing. This year, both of them are careful about separating them back into their colors and capping the containers after each play so that they stay nice and soft.

First Rock Climbing Lesson

2010 July 10
by pk

G and I went to our first climbing lesson today. I was the only parent who knows how to climb (a beginner though), so I managed to check up on G while the other parents were getting taught, very quickly, the basics of belaying and knots. I saw G up on one third way on the wall and was stuck. The instructor asked me to help me. I gave him a few hints on which holds to go to and he managed to move up a few more steps. Then he wanted to come down.

During he main lesson we paired up and I was belaying him. By then he seems tired enough that he didn’t make it up too far up the wall, partly because the wall that we were on had hard foot holds at the beginning.

As I predicted, what he was very good at was learning the knots. He managed to do the figure 8 by himself after two tries. Some of the adults couldn’t do that!

First Time to a Summer Camp

2010 June 28
by PK

Both G and M starting their first ever Summer camp today. It’s just a local day camp, but it is a first. G was pretty cool about it, but M suddenly got very anxious when we were lining up at first day check in. It didn’t help that she found our She will be in a different group from G. She started clinging to us. But I know her enough to know that she’ll get over it very quickly.

I got there to picked them up at the end of the day. She said “I had so much fun I forgot about your three (mommy, daddy and brother). It’s the best camp ever!” So there!

This kid has taste

2010 May 16
by PK

We ran out of liquid hand soap completely in the house. So I pumped a bit of my l’occitane Verbena shower gel into the dispenser in the bathroom for the kids. Next thing I know, G came running to me after washing his hands and said “Smell my wet shirt”. Then he stick his hands in my face and smiled. He liked the Verbena soap. At $20 a bottle I sure hope he does.
